RSVPEstablished in 1991, the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art is, alongside the Dance Biennale, one of the two major international events that constitutes the Biennale de Lyon. About Taking as a point of reference the Principles of Poetic Economy (1976) by French artist Robert Filliou, the exhibition explores how artistic practices engage with economic life through work, exchange and care, as well as through modes of production and understanding of value. Deployed on several emblematic sites in Lyon, the exhibition is part of the city's long history as a center of commerce, industry and finance. Contemporary works are presented alongside historical works, archival documents and objects, creating a series of encounters that situate artistic practice in broader political, social and material contexts, and propose to rethink the ways in which economies are imagined. Impossible to ignore: thinking about social and political change rarely progresses without attention to economic relations. Inspired by the reflections of artist-economist Robert Filliou on the way in which economies are imagined and organized, this edition of the Contemporary Art Biennale brings together practices that question established forms of exchange and cooperation and consider how these could be otherwise. In a city recognized for its commercial and industrial influence, it questions the capacity of art to make visible the presuppositions which underpin economic life and to open them to discussion.'
