Alexandru Dascăl: The Things We Become

The Things We Become, Alexandru's first solo exhibition, brings together a body of sculptural works developed through an ongoing investigation into transformation, repetition and the shifting relationship between image and object. About Starting from the human profile, the artists cuts, fragments, multiplies and reassembles the image until it becomes something else: a sculptural element, a mechanism, a tool, a body, or an abstract form. Yet something of the original image continues to persist within each transformation. The title The Things We Become extends this process beyond the objects themselves. It suggests becoming not as a final state, but as a continuous movement between forms, identities and possibilities. Across the exhibition, what was once a face becomes material, what was singular becomes multiple, and what appears familiar gradually turns into something else. Repetition plays a central role in this transformation. A profile, once detached from its original context, can be reproduced and assembled into larger structures, where individual fragments begin to acquire a collective presence. Through accumulation, rotation and variation, the works shift between the intimate scale of the face and the physical presence of the sculptural body. The exhibition also brings the traces of making into the space. Drawings, templates and modular structures reveal something of the processes through which the sculptures take shape, allowing the space itself to become part of the work’s ongoing construction. Rather than functioning simply as supports, these elements contribute to a sense of an environment in which forms are continuously assembled, rearranged and set into new relationships. Many of the works occupy an uncertain space between recognition and abstraction. They may recall a familiar object or function, only to resist being fully identified. This instability is central to Dascălu's practice: the sculptures do not simply represent transformation, but remain caught within it, suspended between what they once were and what they might become. Developed over a period of almost a decade, The Things We Become brings together this long-form investigation in a first solo presentation, where the persistence of a single visual impulse gives rise to an expanding vocabulary of forms.
