RSVPArt of Mexico and Central America explores artistic expression from the region, looking back at three thousand years of Mesoamerican art from antiquity to the present. About Musical instruments, ceremonial vessels used for feasting, and ballgame equipment illuminate traditions that have long connected communities across the region. Audience-favorite ceramic dogs previously displayed in Ceramics of Western Mexico are joined by depictions of deities and nobles, as well as exquisite jade and gold jewelry. A reproduction of the sarcophagus lid of Pakal the Great, ceramics decorated with glyphs, and codices presented as a digital interactive reveal sophisticated systems of writing and timekeeping. Blending archaeology and fine art, this exhibition presents the art and culture of Mexico and Central America not as a closed past, but as a living tradition. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Raúl Anguiano's immense, two-panel painting The Mayas (1999) engages with Mesoamerican mythology, showing how ancient motifs and subjects are still being used by artists from the region today. Major support for this exhibition is provided by Dr. Richard and Kathleen Barrutia. This exhibition opens November 21 and will become a permanent exhibition at Bowers Museum, free for Santa Ana residents each Sunday with proof of residence. Admission to Art of Mexico and Central America is also free for Bowers members. Become a member for year-round access, exclusive benefits, and more to discover at the Museum.
