RSVPOur London gallery has been refreshed with a new selection of Nordic design to welcome in the colder months. Patinated leather, warmer woods and earthy tones complete the mix. About Downstairs, we were keen to introduce some warmer tones for the autumn. We did this by bringing in a Frits Henningsen group in Niger leather as well as Märta Måås-Fjetterström’s “Röda Ess” rug. The sofa reflects Frits Henningsen’s deep understanding of traditional European furniture styles, particularly the wingback form, which has origins in 17th-century England and was designed to shield the sitter from draughts and create a cosy, private space. It is most likely Henningsen was inspired by furniture he saw during his trips to England in the early 20th Century. Moving upstairs, another highlight of mine is this Erik Wørts sideboard. Its restrained oak and wenge exterior opens to reveal contrasting black and coral-red drawers, and I was particularly drawn to its delicate proportions and the attention to detail in the craftsmanship. We have placed it alongside an exceptional set of six Hans J. Wegner JH-505 “Cow Horn” chairs from 1952. The model is already a remarkable example of Wegner’s work, but finding a large matching set such as this, still retaining its original cane seats, is particularly rare.
