Celebrăm The Met

Starting September 25, 2026, the exhibition "Celebrating The Met: Highlights from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Donation to the Textile Museum" organized as part of the "Textile Museum – Everything Connects" project—is open to visitors at the National Museum of Art of Romania. About The exhibition presents a selection of costumes and textile objects from the donation made by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York to the Textile Museum in Băița, Hunedoara County. The selection brings together pieces from diverse geographical and cultural regions, highlighting both the unique characteristics of their respective traditions and the interconnections regarding materials, techniques, forms, and uses of textiles. Romanian textile heritage plays a significant role in this context, presented in dialogue with objects from other cultures. The connection between the Textile Museum and The Met is also rooted in a professional relationship built over several decades. Dr. Florica Zaharia, founder of the Textile Museum and Conservator Emerita at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, worked for 28 years in The Met’s Department of Textile Conservation, serving as its head for 13 years. The exhibition invites viewers to look at textiles not merely as heritage objects, but as vessels of knowledge regarding the communities that created them, the materials and resources involved, and the techniques and practices passed down through generations.
