Charles Ray

Charles Ray, considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries, presents his first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. About Charles Ray was born in Chicago in 1953 and has lived in Los Angeles since 1981. He is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries. For over five decades, he has created artworks that examine the contemporary world, his life, and ideas concerning physicality and spirituality, all through the discipline of sculpture. Ray has explained that he doesn't think about sculpture as much as he thinks sculpturally. Throughout his career, he has expanded and redefined the scope of his work in many ways. Ray's work engages with art history, the history of its own making, and its installation in space itself. For Ray, if a sculpture is to be embedded in space, it must be made of space — a seemingly contradictory statement, as his work can weigh anywhere from a few ounces to nearly twenty tons. Following his participation in documenta 9 in 1992, the Fridericianum is now proud to present Ray's first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.
