Fermata: Hong Kong in Venice

Fermata is a musical term that captures the moment when notes or rests are prolonged at the performer’s discretion. About The exhibition “Fermata: Hong Kong in Venice” delves into the poetic rhythms of everyday life, resonating with the theme of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, “In Minor Keys”. Carving out a serene space, the exhibition invites visitors to slow down amidst the hectic flow of life and attentively observe the subtle rhythms that quietly construct our existence. The exhibition presents site-specific installation works by two Hong Kong artists, Kingsley Ng and Angel Hui, both of whom draw deeply from Hong Kong’s cultural context and collective life experiences. Together, they reinterpret the subtle aesthetics and rhythms of daily life through an evocative composition of light, sound and movement. Kingsley Ng transforms ordinary urban rituals into meditative encounters, inviting visitors to pause and appreciate the tenderness of transient moments amid the rush of city life. Angel Hui, in turn, guides visitors towards often-dismissed objects and beings, creating intimate encounters that unveil the subtle, underlying pulses of urban life. Established in 1895, the International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia is the world’s oldest international exhibition of contemporary visual arts. In each edition, some 100 countries and regions join the national pavilions and collateral events. The HKMoA, upon invitation by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), is collaborating with the HKADC for the first time to participate in the Collateral Event of the Biennale Arte 2026, fostering the development of the Hong Kong art scene and enhancing exchanges between Hong Kong and the international art community, highlighting Hong Kong art on the international stage.
