At Frieze Masters, The Gallery of Everything returns to Spotlight with a solo exhibition of works on paper by Czech artist Anna Zemánková (1908 - 1986). About Zemánková was born in Moravia, lived through communist rule and did not initiate a drawing practice until she was well into her 50s. Despite having no formal training, she developed a private visual language which was to continue until the end of her life: extraordinary forms - initially in pastel, and later, with collage and embroidery - unfolding with the precision of scientific illustration and the freedom of mediumistic drawing. Zemánková is today recognised as one of the defining figures of 20th century self-taught art. British exhibitions include the seminal Outsiders at the Hayward Gallery (1979) and The Botanical Mind at Camden Art Centre (2021). International exhibitions include the São Paulo Biennial (1981) and the Venice Biennale (2013 + 2024). This presentation marks the gallery's first solo booth devoted to Zemánková. The exceptional group of drawings on view draw from the artist's 30 year practice and include rarely-seen pieces previously selected by curator Massimiliano Gioni for The Encyclopaedic Palace (2013). For a preview of available works, please email the gallery at ge@gallevery.com . The artist’s inaugural retrospective - Fruits with Potato Dumplings Flavour - is currently on view in the Czech Republic and was reviewed in the Financial Times by Jennifer Higgie.
