RSVPThe house has always been a fundamental presence in Fátima Mendonça's painting. About Contrary to the familiar notion that the home is a place of calm and protection, while danger lies beyond its walls, Mendonça's houses are far from being spaces of refuge. The titles of her series are revealing in this respect: The Cake House, The House of Disorder, The House of Restlessness, I Really Love My Little House, I'm Afraid: La, La, La, La, La…, and Carousel House. The kitchen, domestic objects, food, animals, and the most seemingly insignificant gestures of everyday life become, in her work, the substance of painting. The house is not simply where things happen; it is a space of memory, protection and unease, where intimate experience is transformed into image.
