RegisterThe first exhibition in France dedicated to Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), who has only recently been recognised as a key figure in modern art and early abstraction, alongside her male peers Kandinsky, Kupka, Malevich and Mondrian.
Moving away from conventional figurative art, Hilma af Klint created a body of work inspired by spiritualism and science, in which spirals, circles and beams represent the invisible forces that govern the world and a quest for cosmic harmony. Long kept secret at the artist's own request, her work was only presented to the public for the first time in 1986 in a group exhibition entitled ‘The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890-1985’ at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). This event not only highlighted the multiple sources of inspiration for her work (esotericism, folklore and popular art, scientific culture), but also questioned the way in which art history had long ignored female artists and their contribution to the founding movements. | An exhibition by GrandPalaisRmn x Centre Pompidou Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
