About event

Meegan Barnes conjures New York from clay through irreverently detailed ceramics, collapsing time across decades and boroughs to excavate the layers that make locations into characters. About New York is a city of addresses and collisions of cross streets. Some disappear, some become impossible to get into, others survive long enough to become landmarks. The best ones live somewhere between a place and a story about a place – who was there, who met whom, what happened one night…or supposedly did. For New York Minute, Barnes conjures the city from clay through irreverently detailed ceramics that recall Red Grooms's "sculpto-pictoramas." It isn't exactly one New York, or even one decade. Barnes lets time collapse. Downtown meets uptown; lived memory slips into cultural history, television into reality, and eventually it becomes difficult to tell where documentation ends and mythology begins. Barnes approaches the city almost like an anthropologist, following research rabbit holes through photographs, anecdotes, cultural history, and the obscure connections that make a place meaningful. That process is part of what makes Barnes's ceramics so compelling. A restaurant is never just a restaurant. A hotel is never just a hotel. The people who passed through a place become part of its identity, and the stories attached to it accumulate until the location itself begins to function almost like a character. Barnes excavates those layers and gives them physical form. At Dapper Dan's, LL Cool J, Eric B. & Rakim and Mike Tyson appear among the crowd. Indochine brings Marc Jacobs, André Leon Talley, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell around the same table. Downtown, Chloë Sevigny and Rosario Dawson sit outside Supreme, surrounded by faces drawn from the '90s skate scene. At The Odeon, the art world spills in: Mary Boone and Basquiat, Warhol and Gagosian, Jeffrey Deitch and Julian Schnabel. It feels less like a historical reconstruction than the New York of collective memory, where people and places become inseparable from one another. Other New Yorks arrive by way of the screen. Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte stand outside Magnolia Bakery. Satriale's ventures out of the boroughs for Tony and the boys. And then there is the cultural coup de grâce: The Hotel Chelsea. Standing over three feet high and extending nearly four feet wide – an ambitious scale for ceramic – Barnes builds The Hotel Chelsea as a world unto itself, its rooms and balconies crowded with the people who passed through it and the stories they left behind. Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin. Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol. Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. Sid and Nancy. Madonna and Debi Mazar. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Grace Jones does yoga. Writers talk, musicians linger, lovers pair off. History has been rearranged slightly, which may be the point. Barnes approaches the city less as an archive than as something remembered and retold. Her ceramics preserve New York in much the same way its stories have always circulated: through memory, rumor, photographs, friends, movies, magazines, and the persistent sense that you should have been there. Maybe you were. Meegan Barnes is a ceramic artist and painter whose work draws on pop culture, architecture, and art history to create her signature "ceramic-scapes." Barnes received her BFA from California College of the Arts in 1996. She began her career in New York as an illustrator, contributing to publications including Vibe and Paper Magazine, before expanding her practice into ceramics in 2021. Barnes has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions at One Trick Pony Gallery, Los Angeles; Megan Mulrooney, Los Angeles; La Loma Gallery, LA; Spax Projects, Brussels; and Galerie Lefebvre, Paris, among others. Her work has been featured in Hyperallergic, Juxtapoz, Cultbytes, and New American Paintings, among other publications. Read more Toggle Mixed media Sculpture
