About event

This exhibition invites you to explore cherished memories that shape our sense of self. The works on display are intimate moments where patterns and imagery evoke personal and collective pasts, creating visions of what was, and is remembered.

This exhibition by Jo Beattie invites you to explore cherished memories that shape our sense of self. The works on display are intimate moments where patterns and imagery evoke personal and collective pasts. Through delicate forms and transparent surfaces each piece suspends time, allowing reflections of remembered experience to linger in the mind. Shadows play a vital role here – cast onto the gallery walls they extend the artworks beyond their physical boundaries, transforming light into a Journey through Time and Place. The subject matter of Beattie’s work ranges from: Intimate Memories - Those memories of conversations and moments we share with family and friends. Playful Memories - Discovering how powerful emotions and memories are evoked by old toys. Transformative Memories - Foreign travel has often changed the way that she looks at the world. ‘All the above are part of my obsession with our emotional attachment to people and objects. It became even more poignant during Covid lockdown when our separation from people and experiences brought memories into even sharper focus. All my work develops these themes and is produced in similar ways. I draw from and respond to images that are personal to me and I produce a drawing on a computer and transfer it to a sewing machine. I then machine this image out, hand-colour and embellish it. This image is then sandwiched between sheets of Perspex or embedded into resin. My work often uses shadow to reflect the image of our collective memories and experiences. I am interested in the way my artwork can enhance the idea of memory by having a shadow of the image reflected onto a plain background a distance away from the actual work. This enables the image to become larger and more defined.’ Dates: 8th - 15th April 2026 Opening Times: Jo will be working from the Gallery 8th-10th April 10am-3pm. Outside these times the exhibition will be available to view by appointment only - please email us . Location: 56b Old Broad Street, London, EC2M 1RX (2 mins walk from Liverpool Street)
