RSVPThe Museum of Architectural Drawing presents the first comprehensive exhibition of Nizo Yamamoto's artistic work outside of Japan, celebrating one of the most influential art directors of Japanese animated film. About The Museum of Architectural Drawing dedicates the first comprehensive exhibition of Nizo Yamamoto's artistic work outside of Japan (1953–2023). Yamamoto is one of the most influential art directors of Japanese animated film. For more than four decades, he created visual worlds that have had a lasting impact on the visual memory of the genre. Yamamoto's work has long enjoyed great acclaim in Japan. Internationally, however, his name is still far less well known than the films in whose creation he played a key role. Through work for Castle in the Sky (1986), The Last Fireflies (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997) and The Girl Who Leaped Through Time (2006) his paintings are familiar to a worldwide audience. With Nizo Yamamoto – Master of Anime Scenography, the Museum of Architectural Drawing builds on its previous exhibitions on the background art of Japanese animated films: In 2016, Anime Architecture showcased the urban spaces of important science fiction anime such as Patlabor (1989), Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Ghost in the Shell 2 – Innocence (2004); In 2022, AKIRA – The Architecture of Neo Tokyo presented the original background images of the groundbreaking film AKIRA (1988) for the first time worldwide. The exhibition is curated by Stefan Riekeles. A publication will be released to accompany the exhibition.
