IDEA in/formation is an evolving exhibition of visual, technical, and conceptual artworks revolving around the changing conditions of thought and experience. About How does an idea take shape—in our minds, in the world? What role do technologies of information play in the conceptual and aesthetic forms through which we live and express ourselves? In the 1880s, Friedrich Nietzsche wrote the following on his new typewriter (a cutting-edge technology at the time): “Our writing utensils collaborate with us in the formation of our thoughts.” In the age of Claude and ChatGPT, it is harder than ever to deny Nietzsche’s insight. Whatever else they may be, today’s generative technologies are hardly neutral “tools.” They are infrastructures of thought, giving form to ideas that may or may not belong to “us.” These ideas are environmental, reshaping the earth on which we walk. But we have little idea what new, possibly monstrous formations they may bring forth.
