Nowhere art, now here: bold abstracts by Ulrike Behrendt is a celebration of Ulrike’s mixed media paintings. She observes the world around her and distills these observations into small collections of work which embrace a bold colour pallet as well as a wide variety of textures and forms. About Born in Berlin, Ulrike Behrendt grew up in a socialist dictatorship. She now believes that, for her, this experience heightened the power of words and the messages found between the lines. Fluent in several languages, she explores the context and connection of words, often in an ironical way. Most recently she has been exploring the interaction between images and words on the theme of body dysmorphia. Her work explores different approaches to visualising the tension between herself and her body, mainly in the form of digital photography and the manipulation of these images. Her creative practice embraces a wide range of processes in 2D, 3D and moving images. Ulrike’s former career as a scientist informs her attention to detail as well as her search for connection between humanity and our surroundings. She finds inspiration in the loneliness of the rural landscape of Norfolk. Her work plays on the idea of meaning and significance in objects and images, although she always returns to mixed media paintings, inviting the viewer to take a closer look and challenge their first impression.
