RSVPPost Truth - No Ded is a new exhibition curated by David Cooper opening at Vestry St. About 'NO DED' is a title dictated in dyslexic dialect echoing the slogan written on a bed sheet and draped by the prisoners of the 1990 Strangeways Prison Riots. The context of social and political manipulation (there were no dead prison wardens, contrary to the press at the time) can be re-interpreted and repurposed for a modern context in an era known as quintessentially post-truth. Post-Truth refers to a cultural condition in which the distinction between fact and fiction no longer function as a straightforward criterion for evaluating claims. Truth emerges from a combination of verifiable evidence, affective investment, and identification with particular narratives. A statement becomes relevant when it fits into an existing web of beliefs and expectations, and when it offers a story that feels coherent to a specific audience. Art does not function as a neutral illustration of events or conditions that exist elsewhere, as it rearranges and filters those conditions through particular formal and conceptual strategies. Practices based on juxtaposition, speculation, and fiction propose concrete alternatives for understanding specific situations. In that sense, artistic practice can reflect on the dynamics associated with Post-Truth culture and can examine them through its own structures. The artwork becoming a laboratory where narratives can be opened, compared, and stressed against one another. *In conversation with David Cooper, Rhiannon Harper and Alessandro Morter.
