RegisterExtremely rare opportunity to purchase art from the very best Northern talent
New Light Art, the charity that celebrates contemporary Northern artistic talent is having to sell its prestigious collection of pieces due to lack of funding. The sale of the New Light Art Collection will take place at the Anderson & Garland Auctioneers in Newcastle on Thursday 2nd April at 10am. Rebekah Tadd, CEO of New Light says: “It comes with great sadness that the New Light Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision to discontinue the New Light Collection. As a very small charity, we have found it increasingly difficult to find funding to support the costs of logistics, administration, insurance and storage of the New Light Collection. “In 2025 our wonderful patron of 15 years stepped down and we are now seeking new funding to enable the charity to continue. We have a very exciting programme of events planned for 2026 and 2027 but if we are unsuccessful in securing funding, like many charities in this financial climate, we are unfortunately, facing the very real possibility that the charity will be forced to close. The incredibly difficult decision has been made to sell the works and use the money raised to further New Light’s charitable objectives to promote art in the North of England by supporting the development of art and artists in the region.” The collection includes pieces by contemporary, established and emerging artists who are recognised as some of the best in the North of England. These include the late Norman Ackroyd RA, Anne Desmet RA, Mark Demsteader, Jo Taylor and Tom Wood. New Light is a charity run by a dedicated group of people who are passionate about the visual arts in the North of England. Established in 2010 to address the lack of opportunity for Northern artists – with the artworld being predominately London-centric, New Light gives emerging and established Northern artists the opportunity to showcase their work, through its programme of exhibitions and competitions, including the biannual New Light Art Prize. In a bid to make contemporary art more accessible, they also run Art for All – an education programme which includes talks, workshops and school projects. Until now the New Light Collection has been taken out of the gallery setting and loaned to public bodies and charities, such as schools and hospitals, giving people from all walks of life the opportunity to view these unique pieces of art, bringing joy in everyday spaces. Rebekah continues: “This is a hugely unique opportunity to purchase artwork produced by some of the best artists in the North of England. As a charity, we rely entirely on donations and sponsorship for funding and by purchasing this artwork, not only will you enjoy some of the most wonderful artwork, you will help New Light to continue to support and cultivate Northern talent.” The New Light collection has been growing since 2010 through donations and grants and includes more than 80 pieces of artwork from Northern artists. Launched in 2020 at Grantley Hall and sponsored by McInroy & Wood, the collection of paintings, prints and drawings reflect the variety and range of Northern talent. Harry Pickup, Auctioneer at Anderson & Garland, said: “This is an incredibly rare and special opportunity to buy contemporary artwork from a hugely talented group of people – artists from the North. Obviously, it is very difficult for the charity to see the collection be sold but the eclectic collection offers a true gift for art lovers keen to celebrate Northern talent.” The auction will take place at the Anderson & Garland Auctioneers on Thursday 2nd April from 10am with a viewing available on Tuesday 31st March at 10am – 3pm. You are also able to buy online with advance registration. It will take place at Anderson House, Crispin Court, Newbiggin Lane, Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE5 1BF.
