Richard Malone: 'duet'

New Art Projects presents 'duet', a solo exhibition by Irish artist Richard Malone, curated by Brian Teeling, exploring queer identity, working-class labour and the boundaries of fine art. About PV: Thursday, 12 November – 6-8pm Open 13 November – 19 December 2026 New Art Projects is delighted to present Duet, a solo exhibition by Irish Artist Richard Malone. Malone, b.1990 (they/them,he/him) is an Irish artist from Wexford. Malone’s practice is known for their exploration of queerness, class and place through sculpture, performance, textiles and installation. Their practice is informed by research into the material language and markers of gender, class and identity, and the lack of a visible record in permanent museum collections. Malone’s ongoing research investigates perceived “truths” in relation to gender ideology, sexuality and working-class labour which directly links to invisible labour practices, such as welding, stitch techniques, woodwork. drapery, weaving and painting. For Malones show at New Art Projects, they continue these investigations and explore the meeting in the middle of two material languages. Firstly: The labour techniques that were learned outside of formal education. Secondly: The fine art hierarchy of painting and mark making. Comparing the latter with the former brings new comparisons between so called ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture, painting and decorating and its paraphernalia, labour techniques, surface, patronage, stitched samplers, wall and floor coverings and direct to wall surface techniques. Through this in depth look at materiality, Malone explores the overlaps in the development of queer and working-class material languages in opposition to wider patriarchal ideals and value systems and critiques existing or assumed systems of categorisation. To explore and develop these sites of materiality Richard Malone will include works made directly onto the gallery walls, paintings, drawings, installation, stitching, fabric and drapery that between them develop and discuss their ongoing research.
