About event

Come and join me for a fun day learning how to make your own beautiful sea urchin sculpture. No experience necessary. My name is Helen McCormick and I'm a local artist and qualified art teacher. I've been creating objects from clay for over 30 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this workshop to share my skills, knowledge and experience. My workshop is designed to be a relaxed friendly space where you can meet new people and have the opportunity to create, learn and have fun. During the first half of the workshop, I will teach you how to make the basic shape of your sea urchin. In the second half of the workshop you will learn how to apply coloured decorating slips to your work through using a brush and slip trailer, as well as carving into your work to create pattern and texture. No experience necessary. All materials and equipment will be provided. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the evening. The only thing you need to bring is an apron or wear old clothes. If you can trim your nails before hand that would be helpful as you will be handling soft clay. After the workshop, I will carefully take your beautiful sculpture home and fire it in my kiln. Your sea urchin will be glazed using a stoneware transparent glaze so that it can be used as a vase. Your work will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the workshop. I will let you know a date and time for collection once they have been fired. I am happy to store your work for 6 months after which date it will be donated to charity. Please follow me on Instagram and Facebook to see photographs of work made in my previous workshops.
