About event

An exhibition of recent paintings, sculptures, and neon by Steve Locke exploring sexuality, desire, racial violence, and the politics of looking. About Alexander Gray Associates presents Steve Locke: I said what I said, an exhibition of recent paintings, sculptures, and neon. Returning to questions of sexuality and desire, racial violence, the politics of looking, and the conventions of portraiture and modernism, the exhibition brings together lines of inquiry Locke has sustained and reworked for decades. Such longevity is notable; rather than settling into fixed styles or closed chapters, these bodies of work remain active, registering shifting formal and political conditions. Their evolution spans the AIDS crisis, the culture wars of the 1990s, and the renewed attacks on Black and Queer lives unfolding today. Less a response to the present than a declaration of persistence, I said what I said affirms both what has endured and what painting can still make newly visible. In his latest paintings, Locke gives that persistence new formal expression. Shifts in scale, heightened color, and newly gestural brushwork bring the artist's painterliness to the fore. Marks build, veil, and fracture the figure as surfaces shift between description and dissolution. Locke's longstanding dialogue with portraiture and modernism is carried not only by quotation or pose but by the physicality of paint itself—its capacity to seduce, obscure, expose, and insist. This painterly immediacy sharpens Locke's engagement with the male figure, a site where pleasure, spectacle, vulnerability, and threat converge. Charged exchanges of glances between men situate danger and desire within the politics of looking, while self-portraits turn the gaze inward, placing the artist under the same scrutiny. Open mouths and studied poses allow vanity and irreverence to unsettle the authority historically accorded to the male portrait. These figures retain the imprint of the historical moments in which Locke first developed them, yet they are not confined to their origins. Reworked over decades, they absorb new conditions of visibility and risk. As the images move beyond the wall, freestanding paintings mounted on artist-made industrial armatures extend this encounter into the viewer's space, making looking physical and reciprocal. The interplay of looking and power takes on a more explicitly historical dimension in Locke's new auction block paintings, which link the languages of Western abstraction and decoration to economies built on colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade. Locke neither reconciles beauty with violence nor allows one to cancel the other; instead, he locates his work within their tension. The 2026 neon that gives the exhibition its title gathers these concerns into a declaration shaped by experience. Suspended in light, "I said what I said" becomes both a public assertion and an expression of personal resolve—affirming Locke's refusal to retract, soften, or abandon the questions that have long structured his practice.
