About event

Dyani White Hawk’s (Sicangu Lakota) 2019 print series, Takes Care of Them, reflects on Lakota women’s roles in four areas: Wówahokuŋkiya (Lead); Wókaǧe (Create); Nakíčižiŋ (Protect); and Wačháŋtognaka (Nurture). About Each large-scale print features a Lakota dress adorned differently, emphasizing uniformity while celebrating the complexity of this important garment. White Hawk uses dresses as a medium to explore color, texture, and iconography, grounded in Lakota cultural knowledge. This print series illustrates the importance of women’s roles within the foundation of Plains culture and encourages visitors to contemplate the beauty of these Lakota garments, which directly relates to their roles.
