The Appearance of Value

A two-person exhibition by Bogdan Djukanović and Lazar Stojić on how value is made visible, from gilded street plants and grain chandeliers to car trim and torn euro banknotes. About HAFEN presents The Appearance of Value, a two-person exhibition by Bogdan Djukanović and Lazar Stojić. Both artists work with materials whose value is settled before they ever reach the studio, and both alter the terms on which that value can be read. Stojić takes his material from cars and currency. Burl wood trim from luxury car interiors is set into illuminated frame boxes, two car doors hang on the wall as a pair, and torn pieces of the first series of euro banknotes are fitted back together with a restorer's patience. The objects keep their origin in plain sight. What shifts is the frame around them, and with it the kind of attention they call for. Djukanović works in the opposite direction. Three standing chandeliers, each 2.4 metres high, are strung with acrylic resin casts of dried foods. Plants picked from the pavement rise out of folded lead and are coated in gold; sugar crystallises on a flower taken from a Paris courtyard; marble slabs carry chains made of grain, rat poison and glitter. The finish is opulent, yet the ordinary or toxic source of each material never disappears. Read more Toggle Painting Installation Sculpture Mixed media
