This annual Project was initiated by the British Art Medal Society to support and encourage the art of lost-wax casting in bronze at British art colleges around the UK, focusing on the art of bas relief, a fantastic challenge for young artists to engage in, and at risk of being lost within the art curriculum. The UK art colleges responded with enthusiasm, and over the past 33 years, the results have been remarkable, as students tackle all the skills necessary to understand and appreciate this art form that has its roots in Renaissance Italy. The art medal, not to be confused with awards for sports or valour, is a two-sided artwork to be held in the hand, where its form, narrative and skills of the artist can be studied. For collectors, as with most cast bronze artwork, it is a multiple, thus it is an artform that is reasonably priced, perfect for owning an original work of art. The subjects are tremendously varied, from landscape to social comment. Each year, prizes are awarded, and at the New Ashgate, the results of the 2026 Project are on display, including the prize-winning medals.
